Choosing your Assessment Track: Size, Sector, and Location

The B Impact Assessment is tailored to the size, sector/industry and location of your company.  These 3 factors will influence the types of questions you see in each section of the assessment. See below for tips on choosing  your Assessment Track:

Understanding Business Size

The “size” track driver represents the number of workers you have working for your company, which should be calculated on a full-time equivalent (FTE) basis. To learn more about calculating the size of your workforce on a FTE basis, see here.

If you have individual independent contractors who work greater than 20 hours per week for an indefinite or greater than  6 month period these count toward your number of workers and should be considered when determining size as well.

If your company’s workers consist only of founders or partners who own 10%+ of your company, then your company’s track size should be “0.” This means there needs to be 1 FTE on payroll beyond the working owners/founders to move from the 0 to 1-9 track. The 0 worker track does not include a Worker section of the B Impact Assessment because your company has no additional workers, and instead the Assessment focuses on other aspects of your company’s operations and impact.    

Determining the Location or Market

The country/region of operations that you select may determine if you see a “Developed,” “Developed - Global,” or “Emerging” markets version of the assessment .
More precisely, a company's Track location is set where the majority of FTE workers are located.

If you are a virtual office, please select your location and continue filling out the assessment. If you have multiple offices, please select the location where the majority of your company’s workers are located.

Selecting the Sector / Industry

There are five different sectors that you can choose from:

• Manufacturing: A company that manufactures >10% of its own products for sale or manufactures products for sale by another company or brand. (e.g. contract manufacturers, assembly lines, breweries, livestock producers).

• Wholesale/Retail: A company that sells physical products and does not own or operate the manufacturing processes or facilities responsible for the creation of those physical goods. (e.g. grocery stores, e-commerce retailers, consumer goods companies that do not manufacture their own product, wholesalers of physical goods).

• Services with Minor Environmental footprint: A company that earns revenue through the provision of non-physical services. Company does not sell a physical product or does not own/operate a retail, wholesale, or manufacturing facility. (e.g. law firms, marketing/communications agencies, software company).

• Services with Significant Environmental footprint: A company that works in a service industry with a significant environmental footprint due to its facilities, supply chain, or the intensity of its operations in delivery of services. (e.g. hotels, restaurants, landscaping companies, universities).

• Agricultural Growers: A company that operates a farm, agroprocessing facility, or sources crops directly from farmer-growers for a majority of raw input materials. If your company is a livestock producer, please select 'Manufacturing'. (e.g. fruit or vegetable farms, farmers' markets, coffee plantations, coffee roasters).

If your company is an educational company, a financial institution, or in the real estate and building industry, make sure that you select this for your profile to see your assessment track as there are specific questions for these industries.

If you think would like to change the industry of your assessment, please find a row below that matches your Sector, Industry Category, and Industry.  Create a ticket and request that your track be changed, and indicate your the Sector, Industry Category, and Industry.

Please note: Once a company is certified B Corp under a specific sector, category, and industry, this selection may not be edited on the public directory (Find-a-B-Corp) until the next recertification cycle.
