Baseline Requirements: Understanding the Reporting Requirement for V2.1

Modified on Mon, 11 Aug at 11:31 AM

The guidance below supports understanding the integration of the baseline requirements into the new B Lab Standards (focus on XXL companies). Please see the overview guide on more information.

The V6 Baseline Requirement:

  1. Reporting: An annual, comprehensive impact report transparent to the public using a third party standard (such as the B Impact Assessment or Global Reporting Initiative).

Maps to the following new B Lab Standard Sub-Requirement:

PSG6.2:  The company reports its social and environmental performance annually and publicly using a third-party standard.

Changes in Compliance Criteria:

  • The reporting requirement takes effect in Year 3 for certifying companies. This means that a company must have published an annual report in the 12 months beforehand (i.e during Year 2).

  • While the compliance criteria remain largely consistent with the original baseline requirements, there are two key additions:

  • Companies must follow a consistent structure to enable year-over-year comparison and demonstrate ongoing progress

  • Reports based on the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) are accepted

  • Companies may use the B Impact Assessment as their reporting framework, provided that:

  • It is comprehensive and updated annually

  • The company is transparent with stakeholders about which reports have been externally verified through the B Corp Certification and recertification process

  • All reports must be overseen by the highest governing body within the scope of certification to ensure appropriate accountability.

Application to Independently Certifying Subsidiaries:

  • The reporting must cover the individual company’s performance, not just that of the parent or group.

  • If the company contributes to a consolidated group report, its specific performance data must be clearly identifiable and accessible via its own company webpage.

  • The company’s section of the report—or any relevant contribution to an out-of-scope group report—must be reviewed and approved by the highest governing body within the subsidiary’s scope of certification.

Related Sub Requirements:

  • X Large and Large companies are also required to meet the impact reporting obligations defined in PSG6.1 under the new B Lab Standards.
