Welcome to the 2019 Inclusive Economy Challenge! We’re so glad you’ve joined the program. Each month, B Lab sends an email to help IEC participants stay on track and receive the benefit of helpful guidance and support along the way. (Be sure your whole IEC team is signed up to receive them!)

For the 2019 Challenge, we started sending these emails in October 2018—we want to be sure you didn’t miss anything! We’ve chronicled the resources we’ve already sent to IEC participants below, as well as the key dates you should be aware of throughout the program. Don’t hesitate to reach out for questions or a brief phone call at inclusion@bcorporation.net. We’re always happy to help.

Important Milestone: It’s Never Too Late to Start

Take Action:

Reconnect to the why: at this point in the Challenge, it’s easy to lose sight of the reason your company took it on in the first place. This work matters, meeting your metrics matters. Build in accountability: Sometimes the quickest way to get back on track is to make a public commitment. Consider taking over a staff meeting or holding a company brown bag to remind leadership and your colleagues about the importance of this work - and even to seek additional support if you’re stuck or need new energy! Jump to step 6 to review the goals you set.

Important Milestone: Resource Round Up

Take Action:

As we head toward our August 30th deadline, it’s important to remind ourselves that we are not the first to do this work. Because many have embarked on this work before, there are many resources available, rooted in best practices and lessons learned, to support us. In fact, a key part of approaching work with an equity mindset is leveraging what has already been created (with attribution!) and moving away from the idea that we must create something new. We’ve rounded up some of those great resources here for you to dive into!

Resources to support you:

  • Check out 9 awesome resources (in the "Learn" section) we've included to help you on your journey

  • Inspiration:

    • B Corp leaders Dr. Tiffany Jana and Ryan Honeyman developed this book brimming with insights on obtaining B Corp certification, improving your social and environmental performance, and building a more inclusive and resilient economy. This edition has been expanded and updated to include a much stronger focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
    • If you’re looking for free resources to advance racial equity in your company, sign up for this digital resource created by B Corp Provoc, that provides self-guided race equity online training you can use in your company!

Important Milestone: From Inclusive Economy to Racial Equity

Take Action:

The Inclusive Economy Challenge comes to a close next month, on August 30th, but this work must continue. You’ve been working hard for 8 months and you’ve accomplished so much!  The next step in the journey is critical. Now we must connect the dots between our company-level impacts and the structural change we want this work to ultimately achieve. One way to take this work to the next level is to create an equity plan to guide your work, rooted in the realities of your resources and capacity.
